Do you live here? What a question! Ludwig van Beethoven, a notorious apartment changer, must have heard it just as often at the end of the 18th century as we all do in the days and years of our present. After all, where and how we live has always hung and still hangs by a thread, spun by financial and political circumstances, the greed (or modesty) of landlords, the character traits and mood swings of roommates, janitors and neighbors. It’s a patchwork quilt of living! And for this very reason, it is emblematic of a whole long human life.

Beethoven worked and understood himself in a European context, his turn towards the great and vast was aimed at humanity. His music is written for humanity and draws its pathos of greatness from this.
Jan Assmann

‹Tiefer Graben 8› by Christoph Marthaler, Anna Viebrock and Sylvain Cambreling is the (thoroughly melancholy) psychogram of a group of housemates, entangled in questions of living, loving and believing – enraged and comforted by the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, who once lived at Tiefen Graben 8 in Vienna.
